Snow Flower

This is a great example of planning a photo ahead. I saw these flowers a week or so ago and thought to myself at the time that if we had just the right amount of snow they would look great poking through. This week we had just the right amount of snow. Unfortunately I didn't have time to stop and get a decent shot: I was late for work, it was dark, cold and snowing, and I had nothing to kneel on to get a decent angle at these very low flowers. As a result, there was quite a lot of camera shake on the photos that I took, the white-balance was off, and they were underexposed. So, while I planned ahead, I failed to take full advantage of it! I hope that the processing has rescued it to make a tolerably good photo.

Camera model : Canon EOS 350D DIGITAL
Date/Time : 2007:01:24 08:18:18
Flash used : No
Focal length : 50.0mm (35mm equivalent: 81mm)
Exposure time: 0.040 s (1/25)
Aperture : f/5.6
ISO equiv. : 100
Whitebalance : Auto
Metering Mode: matrix
Exposure : program (auto)

To process, I adjust the white balance (fortunately the snow made for a pretty good white reference point), cropped to 16x9, minor curves adjustment to correct the exposure, and an unsharp mask.

Stainless / Purple Rain

Two shots this week, both from the same shoot. Considering the mundane subject (a saucepan lid with condensation on it) I'm quite pleased with how these turned out.

Aperture : f/5.6

Post processing consisted of a crop, convert to black and white using the channel mixer, and in the second one a colour cast applied to give it the purple hue.

The Seasons

First off I suppose I should say happy new year as this is my first photo to be posted in 2007. Hurrah.

Taken just before Christmas on a morning when everything was covered in frost. This is actually one of my favourite plants in our garden, especially at this time of year. Its seed heads are a reminder of autumn and sign of a spring to come. The frost provides a real sense of winter of course, and it was this that led me to choose the title "The Seasons", at least until I can come up with something better.

Camera model : Canon EOS 350D DIGITAL
Date/Time : 2006:12:19 08:04:24
Flash used : No
Focal length : 55.0mm (35mm equiv: 89mm)
Exposure time: 0.0100 s (1/100)
Aperture : f/5.6
ISO equiv. : 800
Metering Mode: matrix
Exposure : aperture priority (semi-auto)

Post processing was a layers adjustment, curves adjustment, and duplicate layer to partially desaturate. I'd have liked to go more for a platinum look, but not sure how to achieve that, so I might revisit this another day.
